Miniature Horses - Feeding

The natural foods for Miniature Horses are grasses and grains. They can feed on lawns (1/4 acre minimum per Miniature Horse) and require hay only in the winter. It should be alfalfa and timothy. You should also give the horse grain. A large Mini needs only one cup of grain a day. Add small amounts of corn oil in the horse's diet. Learn which plants are toxic in your area! Miniature Horses should have free access to salt and minerals. But pay attention that you buy only minerals for equine. A small daily quantity of crimped oats is advisable. It's very important for Miniature Horses to have fresh cool water available. Besides, these animals like apples, candy, and cereals, but try not to overfeed the horse.

Miniature Horses - Grooming

To make the coat of a Miniature Horse silky and shiny, brush it regularly. It promotes health by stimulating circulation, removing dead hair and debris. It's good to polish the coat with a soft cloth. Wipe nostrils and dock with soft sponges. Also, like all horses, Minies require hoof trimming and daily feet checking. Horses' teeth should be checked annually, especially in horses under 4 and over 10 years of age.

To prevent the usual horses' diseases such as tetanus, strangles, equine herpes virus, and others, vaccinate your Miniature Horses annually. For external parasites (lice and ticks) use an insecticide wash. To control internal parasites give Miniature Horses a worming paste every 6-8 weeks.
