Miniature Horses - History

The exact origin of Miniature Horses is obscured. In pre-historic times, small horse breeds were the product of surviving harsh climates and limited feed. The earliest written evidence refers to Mini Horses kept as companions for the Hapsburg royalty in the 17th century. European nobility used these horses for carts and carriage pulling. Also Miniature Horses were used in the shallow coalmines because of their stout conformation and the ability to pull weight several times their own.
Centuries of selective breeding have resulted in Miniature Horses with calm dispositions. They may be the descendants of Shetlands, Icelandic Ponies, Spanish Horses, Arabs, and other breeds. By the end of the 19th century, Miniature Horses were introduced from England to the USA to work in mines. Before 1960, there was little public awareness of this breed. In 1972 the first registry for the Miniature Horse was created. There is no recognized standard for Miniature Horses, thus, several separate registries emerged with their own standards and size.
Miniature Horses - Temperament
The vast majority of Miniature Horses have great dispositions - like lap dogs. They are good and patient with little kids. Miniature Horses are bright and quick learners that are eager to please, but should be trained from early in life not to bite and kick.
